As per a Zee News India report, starting from April 2026, Indians can officially enter the “zero cash” highway system, where all the cash counters at toll plazas across the country will be closed.
Besides zero cash, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has imposed more significant penalties if any vehicle does not comply with the operating standards.
For example, if a vehicle owner fails to pay the toll fee while crossing a toll plaza, an e-notice will be issued containing the vehicle number, location and date of passing. This e-notice will be sent to their official mobile number and email as “unpaid user fee”. Not paying the fee within 72 hours will lead to a doubled fine.
The reasons why it is important to check the FASTag balance are:
1. Prevents unnecessary delays at the toll booths during peak hours.
2. Eliminates the chances of a penalty, which can be doubled if caught with an insufficient amount.
3. Helps you track travel expenses accurately.

To ensure uninterrupted journeys, follow these best practices:
1. Enabling auto-recharge will help you to eliminate low-balance situations.
2. Maintain a minimum balance and recharge before starting a long-distance trip.
3. Simplify the recharge process by linking your FASTag with your UPI or wallets.
4. Update contact details to receive timely alerts and notifications.
5. Track transaction history to detect if there is any discrepancy in your account.
Now that you know various methods to check FASTag balance online and offline, you can ensure a seamless travel experience on India’s highways. Keeping your FASTag active and sufficiently funded not only saves time but also contributes to a smoother, cashless transportation ecosystem.
You can know if your FASTag balance is low through SMS alerts sent after toll deductions. You may also receive low-balance notifications when your wallet falls below a set limit, often around ₹200 for passenger vehicles.
No, there is no fixed minimum balance required in FASTag. As per NHAI guidelines, users can pass through toll plazas as long as their FASTag wallet has a non-negative balance. If the balance becomes negative after a toll deduction, the issuing bank can recover the amount from the security deposit, which is later adjusted during the next recharge.
If your FASTag balance is deducted incorrectly, you should immediately report the issue to your issuer bank through customer care or the app’s “Dispute” section or by calling 1033. Make sure to lodge a complaint within 35 days and provide details such as the toll plaza name, date, and time of the transaction.
