Stop guessing, calculate your cholesterol ratio today and take control of your heart health in seconds! Want to know how? Use our online Cholesterol Ratio Calculator - just enter your total cholesterol level and HDL level, and get instant results.
High cholesterol often doesn't cause symptoms, but it comes with serious health risks. So, if you are dealing with diabetes, obesity, or high blood pressure, it is important to calculate your cholesterol risk ratio.
Want to learn more? Read out the blog and learn how to calculate your cholesterol levels, what the results mean, and how cholesterol ratios impact your lifestyle.
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that is essential for producing hormones and building cells. It is found in the blood, carried by proteins. When these two combine, it becomes a lipoprotein.
Our body uses cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help with digestion.
Total cholesterol combines good and bad cholesterol. This is just a mixed bag of overall cholesterol levels. This is why it is not the best predictor to specify heart disease risk.
1. Desirable: Less than 200 mg/dL (optimal is actually under 150 mg/dL)
2. Borderline High: 200-239 mg/dL
3. High: 240 mg/dL and above
High-density lipoprotein transports cholesterol from cells and takes it to the liver for disposal or breakdown out of the body. It is like a waste removal service from the body. HDL is actually good cholesterol, and high levels of HDL are better for your heart health.
1. High Risk: Below 40 mg/dL
2. Borderline: 40-59 mg/dL
3. Optimal: 60 mg/dL and above
Low-density lipoprotein is bad cholesterol that leads to serious heart disease. It delivers cholesterol directly to cells, but it can clog arterial walls and lead to major heart problems.
1. Very High: 190 mg/dL and above
2. High: 160-189 mg/dL
3. Borderline High: 130-159 mg/dL
4. Near Optimal: 100-129 mg/dL
5. Optimal: Below 100 mg/dL
It stores energy from food. Triglycerides can lead to artery problems, increasing stroke and heart disease risk.
1. Very High: 500 mg/dL and above
2. High: 200-499 mg/dL
3. Borderline High: 150-199 mg/dL
4. Normal: Below 150 mg/dL
To take control of your heart health, maintain cholesterol levels and consult doctors.
Opt for Bajaj General critical health insurance plans to manage finances for heart health-related treatments, doctor consultations, and diagnostic tests. Health insurance plans from Bajaj General offer cashless hospitalisation and advanced treatments without any upfront payments.

To get your total cholesterol (TC), you will need to know your HDL, LDL, and triglyceride levels.
“HDL in mg/dL + LDL in mg/dL + (Triglycerides in mg/dL x 0.2)”
First, multiply the triglyceride level by 0.2, add the result to the LDL and HDL levels. This calculation gives you an overview of your cholesterol levels
Suppose your HDL level is 50 mg/dL, the triglycerides are 150 mg/dL, and the LDL is 120 mg/dL.
So, your total cholesterol level is = 50 + 120 + (150 × 0.2)
= 200 mg/dL
To calculate cholesterol risk ratio, divide your total cholesterol by your HDL level.
“TC in mg/dL ÷ HDL in mg/dL”
1. Bad: 5.0 or higher (higher risk)
2. Good: 3.5-5.0 (average risk)
3. Ideal: Below 3.5 (lower risk)
In this scenario, you can calculate your cholesterol risk ratio using the cholesterol ratio calculation formula.
= 200 ÷ 50
= 4.0, which shows an average risk of heart disease.
Measure your LDL and HDL levels to calculate chol HDL/LDL ratio. This is the crucial measure for determining heart risk.
“LDL in mg/dL ÷ HDL in mg/dL”
1. Too High: 5.0 or higher (higher risk)
2. Good: 2.0-5.0 (average risk)
3. Ideal: Below 2.0 (lower risk)
You can measure your LDL against HDL with this formula.
= 120 ÷ 50
= 2.4. This shows an average risk for heart disease.
Your triglyceride ratio also helps to determine your heart stroke risk.
“TG in mg/dL ÷ HDL in mg/dL”
1. Too High: 4.0 or higher (higher risk)
2. High: 2.0-4.0 (increased risk)
3. Ideal: 2.0 or below (lower risk)
Spot your heart-stroke risk with this formula and the above measures.
= 150 ÷ 50
= 3.0, which shows a higher risk.
These ratios help doctors determine the best treatment plan for heart health. Knowing your numbers can help you take control of your heart health.
When LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels get too high, it can cause serious health problems.
1. Atherosclerosis: Plaque builds up in your arteries, making it harder for blood to flow. This can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
2. Heart Disease: High cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, which can be life-threatening.
3. Peripheral Artery Disease: Narrowed arteries in your legs can cause pain and make it hard to move around.
On the other hand, having too little cholesterol can also be problematic.
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Cholesterol is needed to produce certain hormones, so low levels can disrupt hormone production.
2. Increased Stroke Risk: Some research suggests that very low cholesterol levels might increase the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke.
3. Mental Health Concerns: Low cholesterol has been linked to depression and anxiety in some people.
Making lifestyle changes and considering medication can help manage high cholesterol.
1. Eat Heart-Smart: Focus on whole foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats. Cut back on saturated and trans fats.
2. Get Moving: Regular exercise can boost your good cholesterol (HDL) and lower the bad kind (LDL).
3. Slim Down: Reaching a healthy weight can make a big difference in your cholesterol numbers.
4. Medications: Medicines commonly used to lower LDL cholesterol or reduce cholesterol absorption in your gut.
If your cholesterol is too low, dietary changes can help.
1. Add Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, and olive oil are great additions to your diet.
2. Omega-3s are a Plus: Fatty fish and other omega-3-rich foods can be beneficial.

A sedentary lifestyle, high-fat diets, lack of exercise, obesity, alcohol abuse, and smoking can increase cholesterol levels. Sometimes high cholesterol levels can also be caused by genetic reasons.
Yes, exercise is a great way to reduce bad cholesterol levels, body fat, and more. Plan a 30-minute regular brisk walk to promote healthy living and lower cholesterol levels.
Generally, a healthy cholesterol ratio is lower than 5, with 3.5 being the healthy range. Actually, there is no specific healthy cholesterol ratio for different ages.
To calculate your cholesterol ratio, use the cholesterol ratio calculation formula: Total cholesterol number divided (/) by HDL cholesterol.
Now calculate the cholesterol ratio:
280 / 60 mg per DL
= 4.67.
Your 4.67 cholesterol ratio falls under the average range, but your total cholesterol is high. That reflects your current health status. Consult a medical professional and make lifestyle changes with professional guidance.
Focus on a balanced diet, monitor your caloric intake, and plan regular exercise to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. As we age, our metabolism slows, requiring adjustments to our lifestyle to stay healthy and avoid the risk of heart disease. Also, avoid alcohol intake and tobacco smoke to lower cholesterol risk.
Medical insurance provides financial protection against unexpected medical expenses, ensuring access to quality healthcare without depleting your savings.
You can add your spouse, children, parents, and other dependents as per the policy terms, ensuring comprehensive family coverage.

Delaying premiums can result in policy lapse, losing coverage benefits and financial protection, and may lead to difficulties in renewing the policy.
Request a physical copy from the insurer or take a printout of the digital policy document received via email.
Claims should be made within the stipulated time as per the policy terms to avoid rejection and ensure timely processing.
Pre-existing conditions are medical conditions you had before buying your Individual Health Insurance plan. Coverage for these might require waiting periods or exclusions. Be transparent about your health history.
Insurers cover hospital bills through reimbursement (you pay upfront and get reimbursed later) or cashless hospitalisation (insurer settles bills directly with network hospitals).
Individual Health Insurance premiums often qualify for tax deductions under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act (India).
Personal medical insurance offers financial protection against unexpected medical expenses due to illness, accidents, or hospitalisation. It provides peace of mind and safeguards your savings.
