Have you ever been in a situation where you have left your driving licence at home and had to pay a fine? Well, you do not need to worry now. Digital governance has changed how Indian citizens manage everyday documents.
Carrying physical papers for routine checks is no longer necessary when trusted government platforms offer legally valid digital alternatives. DigiLocker and mParivahan solutions have made it easier for vehicle owners to store, access, and present important records such as driving licences and vehicle insurance anytime, anywhere.
This guide explains how both platforms work, how they differ, and how you can use them effectively.
DigiLocker is a secure digital document storage platform launched by the Government of India. It is to promote paperless access to official records. The platform allows citizens to store, retrieve, and share government-issued documents, such as driving licences, RCs, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and more, in electronic form.
All of the documents available in DigiLocker are legally recognised and treated at par with physical originals by authorities.

DigiLocker operates through direct integration with government databases. In this way, it ensures authenticity and tamper-proof access to documents.
Here is how the system functions:
1. Firstly, users sign in using their mobile number or Aadhaar-linked credentials.
2. DigiLocker fetches documents directly from issuing authorities.
3. Thus, most records do not require manual uploads.
4. Then the retrieved documents are stored securely in the user’s digital account.
5. You can share those files digitally with authorities when verification is necessary.
This working system of the software ensures accuracy and eliminates forged or outdated records.
The following are the benefits of using DigiLocker:
1. Easy document access: Once you link to the app, your documents remain available on your phone anytime, even during roadside checks.
2. Legal acceptance: DigiLocker documents are legally valid and accepted by traffic authorities across India.
3. Paperless convenience: The use of this app reduces the need to carry physical licences, RCs, and insurance papers.
4. High security: Since digital security is a concern, with cyber security incidents rising at over 54% in between 2022 and 2024. This application uses encryption, Aadhaar authentication, and controlled sharing permissions.
5. Multi-purpose usage: It stores documents beyond driving, including education, health, and financial records
