A driving license is a mandatory document that you need to have if you are driving your two-wheeler or four-wheeler on Indian roads. This important document is issued by the Government of India and administered by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). In India, you can apply for a driving license at the age of 16, starting with a provisional driving license, which can then be converted into a permanent license when you turn 18 years old. However, you need to submit a specific set of documents and appear for a driving test in order to obtain your driving license.
Taking into consideration the chaos and increasing number of accidents on Indian roads, the Government of India is planning to change some driving and traffic rules. The amendment in these rules is expected to bring in more discipline in people driving on the heavily loaded roads. In one such move, the Road Transport and Highway Ministry of India proposed a bill in Lok Sabha to make Aadhaar Card a mandatory document for obtaining a driving license in India. The bill also proposes to impose hefty fines on people violating traffic rules and digitize the process of getting a driving license. This bill has already passed in Lok Sabha and is now awaiting approval from the members of Rajya Sabha. So, yes, you might soon have to compulsorily submit your Aadhaar Card while applying for a driving license. Also remember that while driving your vehicle on Indian roads, besides a valid driving license you also need to have a motor insurance policy. It is better to have a comprehensive two wheeler insurance or car insurance policy so that you are protected in case of any unfortunate incident.
