Once you purchase a vehicle in India, you can apply for a vehicle registration certificate (RC) by submitting Form 20, with a valid address proof, invoice of your purchase and an insurance copy to your local transport office.
While vehicle dealers usually handle this process, you also have the option to apply yourself. After the vehicle inspection is completed, the RC is issued.
As per the data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), in early 2026, the retail sales of vehicles stood at 24,09,362 units. If you are among these new vehicle owners, learn here how to apply for your RC in detail.
A certificate of vehicle registration is a mandatory document that you must obtain from your Regional Transport Office (RTO). It is because this document proves that you are the legal owner of your vehicle.
An RC contain critical information about your vehicle, including the following:
1. Your vehicle’s registration number
2. The detailed make and model of your vehicle
3. Your vehicle's engine capacity and type (e.g. 1000cc, 4-stroke, etc.)
4. The engine number of your vehicle
5. Chassis number
6. Details of the vehicle owner
Being a mandatory document, driving without an RC typically leads to a monetary penalty.
In India, such penalties can amount to ₹5,000 for the first offence and it may increase for subsequent breaches or may lead to vehicle impounding. Therefore, applying for and carrying a valid RC is imperative to drive legally on Indian roads.
