International student medical insurance is a health insurance plans which covers the medical costs faced by students. They are specialised plans which work both in India and abroad.
Although buying travel insurance is necessary if you are embarking on an academic journey abroad, it may not be enough to pay for the expensive healthcare. Therefore, for international students, global health insurance acts as a safety net.
For children studying in India, student health insurance helps them be prepared to tackle any medical emergency. This is essential for a smooth and uninterrupted academic journey.
International healthcare is expensive. In fact, the average medical bill for a 1-day inpatient hospital stay in the USA is approximately ₹2.6 lakh*! According to a recent study, the average American has to work 384 hours just to cover a regular hospital stay.
Without international student health insurance, you may be forced to stop your education. However, student health insurance helps you tackle huge medical bills in case you sustain an injury requiring urgent treatment.
Student health insurance plans cover medical costs in India and in other countries. So, you do not have to buy different policies and pay extra when your child decides to travel outside India for study.
For example, Sheila completed her Bachelor’s from Mumbai and got a scholarship to Harvard University. You do not have to worry about buying another health insurance policy to cover the expenses. Health insurance for students studying abroad lets you continue your coverage outside India as well.
Any parent would be worried about their child’s safety in an unknown country. Although they cannot physically be there to support you every time, medical insurance for international students lets them have peace of mind.
For example, Rohan sustained a broken knee while playing college football. If he didn’t have insurance, his parents would have to scramble to arrange the huge cost of surgery. But Rohan’s parents invested in a study abroad health insurance, and can breathe a sigh of relief during a crisis.
Buy Bajaj General Insurance’s Global Health Care Insurance and secure your child’s dreams today.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), at least 12-13% of students face severe stress and depression from their studies. If they have to think about the rising healthcare costs and how they will manage if a medical emergency arises, it will further add to their stress.
That’s why Bajaj General Insurance offers a cashless hospitalisation facility. With us, you do not have to worry about getting treatment. You can focus on your academics, while we handle the medical bills.
Under the comprehensive health insurance plan from Bajaj, students can get various benefits, such as inpatient, day-care procedure, annual preventive health checkup, AYUSH, air ambulance, and mental illness treatment coverage.
For international students, you can avail coverage for ICU, dialysis, chemotherapy, a single private air-conditioned room, nursing expenses and other benefits. You can also get outpatient and dental plan benefits under this policy.
If you are planning to travel to Australia, Canada, or the USA, you must have student health insurance. Universities will not accept your application if you do not have valid proof of student medical insurance.
For example, if you want to study in Australia, you must have their Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Otherwise, your visa might be rejected. Therefore, having comprehensive student health insurance increases your chances of getting into your dream country and university.
Let us walk through the process of how student health insurance works:
The Global Health Care Plan provides 2 types of plans: the Imperial Plan and the Imperial Plus Plan. The Imperial Plan has a domestic sum-insured range of ₹37.5 lakh to ₹75 lakh and an international sum-insured range of $100K to $200K.
The Imperial Plus Plan offers a ₹1.12 crore to ₹3.75 crore (domestic) and $300K to $1 million (international) sum insured.
After a one-time annual payment, your coverage will be activated after a 30-day initial waiting period. In this period, you cannot claim any diseases or illnesses unless it is due to an accident.
Apart from that, you can only claim for pre-existing diseases (PED) or procedures after you complete the specified waiting periods. For the international cover, you have to wait 36 months before you can file a claim for PED.
If you need any emergency or planned medical assistance, you can visit network hospitals for cashless treatment. We will directly pay the bill to the hospital, and you do not need to pay anything out-of-pocket.
However, for reimbursement claims, you need to submit the bills in order to receive the amount.
Rohan, a 19-year-old student, is covered under the Global HealthCare Plan. While playing football on campus, he twists his knee and is rushed to a network hospital. The diagnosis reveals a ligament tear that requires surgery.
Since the injury is due to an accident, the waiting period does not apply, and Rohan receives immediate, cashless treatment. The total hospital bill, which includes surgery, room rent, and diagnostics, comes to ₹1,50,000. Rohan's policy covers the entire amount directly with the hospital.
After being discharged, his physiotherapy sessions cost an additional ₹15,000, which is also reimbursed under the post-hospitalisation coverage, providing him and his family with significant financial relief.
During a period of high academic stress, 21-year-old Priya begins experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. She decides to seek professional help and books appointments with a therapist recommended by her university's wellness centre.
Since the therapist is within the policy's network, Priya opts for cashless sessions. Over several months, she attends therapy regularly, with the total cost amounting to ₹45,000. Her Global Health Care Plan covers these mental health services up to the specified limit, so she does not have to pay anything out of pocket.
By using her insurance, Priya can address her mental health and manage her stress effectively, allowing her to continue her studies. With insurance, she can seek help successfully without the added burden of therapy expenses.
