What is the Water Intake Calculator?

The water intake calculator is a smart tool designed to estimate the ideal amount of water you should drink each day. It considers key factors like your weight, age, activity level, gender, and surrounding environmental conditions. In short, it helps you understand your body’s unique hydration needs.

How to Use the Water Intake Calculator?

It helps calculate how much water I should drink in a day, considering weight, weather, activity, and special needs.

    Weight

Body weight is the primary factor in determining an individual's hydration needs. The body water need calculator uses a baseline of 35 mL of water per kilogram body weight. For example, the water intake calculator follows the formula,

body weight × baseline of water per kilogram (without extra activity).

This measures the amount of water needed. Hence, a 70 kg person with no extra activity needs to drink 2.45 litres of water per day (70 kg × 35 ml = 2.45 litres).

    Activity Level

Physical activity leads to sweating that increases respiration and the need for water. Choose activity level among lightly active, sedentary, intense or moderate to measure the required amount of fluid.

For example, a 70 kg adult who works out for 30 minutes can intake an additional 0.5 litre of water. However, an intense workout adds an extra 1 litre of water intake, bringing the total to 3.45 litres of water daily.

    Climate

Hot and humid weather increases fluid loss through excessive sweating. If you spend your maximum day outdoors in a hot or tropical region, the water intake calculator can bump your daily water intake target.

    Special Condition

Medications or certain health conditions can affect your hydration needs. Consider the health status to calculate the amount of water to drink. Several conditions, including breastfeeding, pregnancy, and medical conditions, require extra fluid intake.

The water intake calculator includes an option for special conditions and automatically adjusts fluid requirement.

Why is Water Intake Crucial to Life?

    Regulating Body Temperature

The human body is composed of approximately 60% water, which helps tissues, cells and organs to function properly. It enables respiration and sweating, allowing the body to maintain a stable internal temperature by releasing excessive heat.

    Nutrients Transportation

A single cell of our body relies on water to synthesise proteins, carry out biochemical reactions and transport ions. It powers the metabolic process and supports cellular functions.

    Support Cellular Function

Water is also a vital component of blood. It transports oxygen and nutrients to cells throughout our body while carrying metabolic waste to the kidneys for removal, and supports overall health and functioning.

    Improve Digestion

Water breaks down food in the intestines and stomach to ensure that adequate nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream effectively.

    Facilitate Glowing Skin

Drinking enough water means adequate hydration of the body. It keeps our skin cells plump, supports the skin’s barrier function and improves elasticity that gives a glowing and healthy appearance.

    Lubricates Joints

Good water intake plays a big role in maintaining joint and bone health. It supports synovial fluid that reduces friction and improves joint movement, making it smoother and less stiff.

    Supports Moods and Cognitive Function

Mild dehydration causes fatigue and headaches, and affects mood, memory and concentration. Hence, proper water intake improves body energy level, preserves mental clarity and boosts emotional stability.

How Much Water Should Be Intaken Daily?

    1. Babies: A baby needs approximately 0.7 to 0.8 litres of water in a day, which is typically obtained from milk.

    2. Children: Children aged 1 to 3 years should drink 1 litre (equivalent to 4 glasses) of water per day, including milk and juice.

    3. Kids: They aged between 4 years and 8 roughly require 1.2 litres of water daily (approximately 5 glasses).

    4. Pre-Teens: 9 to 12-year-old pre-teens need 1.7 to 2 litres (approximately 7-8 glasses) of water regularly, depending on their level of activity.

    5. Teenagers: However, teenagers must drink 2 to 2.5 litres of water, equivalent to 8 to 10 glasses of water, especially when participating in sports.

    6. Adult Women: Young adults should drink 2 to 3 litres of water on average to stay healthy and maintain their skin glow.

    7. Adult Men: At the same time, adult men intake 2.7 to 3.7 litres of water, approximately 11 to 15 glasses of water. Sufficient water intake leads to a higher metabolic rate and muscular mass.

Tips to Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

    Start Early

Your body loses fluid overnight through breathing, so start your day by drinking a glass of water once you wake up.

    Carry Bottle

Try to carry a 500 ml water bottle and set a goal to finish it twice before your lunch and twice in the evening.

    Natural Water Sources

Drink a hydrating water mixture, adding a slice of lemon, cucumber, and mint if drinking plain water makes you feel bored. Drinking this mixture without adding sugar can increase water intake.

    Set Reminder

You can set a reminder in your smartphone, watch, hydration app or set an alarm that prompts you every 60 to 90 minutes to drink water. Setting a reminder is helpful, especially if you are busy throughout the day at work.

    Eat Water Reach Food

Add water-rich foods to your regular diet, including oranges, watermelons, and strawberries. You can also include vegetables such as lettuce, cucumber and celery that contribute approximately 20% of your daily fluid needs.

    Adjust Activity

According to your activity schedule, you need to increase your water intake. For 20 minutes of moderate exercise, you need to drink an extra 1 glass of water regularly, while for an intense workout, consider water with electrolytes.

    Monitor Urine Frequency

You can monitor urine frequency and colour, for example, 4 to 5 times, light yellow or clear urine is normal. However, dark yellow urine indicates a red flag of insufficient fluid in the body.

    Mind Temperature

Drink cold water that is more encouraging and refreshing to have larger shapes. However, during meals, individuals intake room temperature water in large quantities.

Advice on Intake Water for Special Groups

    Adolescents and Children

Kids lose fluid more quickly because they play throughout the day and have a higher surface area to body weight ratio. Keep flavoured water without adding sugar, and encourage a routine water intake system throughout the day.

    Pregnant and Breastfeeding women

During pregnancy, women are advised to drink an extra 3 glasses of water regularly. Similarly, while breastfeeding, women need approximately 5 extra glasses of water to support blood volume expansion, amniotic fluid and milk production.

    Outdoor Workers and Athletes

They lost fluid due to sweat per hour. Outdoor Workers and athletes can replace normal water with electrolytes and water solution to maintain water balance in the body. They can strategically drink  250 to 500 ML of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

    Seniors

As we age, it diminishes our thirst sensation and declines kidney function. This makes senior citizens prone to dehydration, so seniors need to choose water-rich foods as a supplement to taking sufficient water.

    Medical Conditions

People with certain medical conditions, such as heart failure and kidney disease, can struggle with fluid handling. They can follow the physician's hydration plan as sufficient water intake helps flush out body germs and minimise discomfort.

Tailoring body water intake tips ensures proper hydration, but health insurance is essential to cover huge medical expenses due to chronic conditions from dehydration. Health insurance plans are safe for seniors against costly medical interventions due to age-related vulnerabilities.

Use the online health insurance calculator from Bajaj General Insurance to find the perfect health insurance for heart patients or critical conditions, to ensure timely medical care access and cashless treatment.

    Final Words

Water is the cornerstone of the human body that regulates body temperature, gives skin its glow, and supports cognitive functions. Using a personalised body weight and water intake calculator helps understand the science behind adopting sustainable habits and daily fluid requirements. Hence, you can transform hydration into a task for wellness.

Can excessive water consumption be harmful?

Yes, drinking excessive water over a long time can be harmful. In extreme situations, it can lead to water intoxication. How much water should my child drink daily?

Children aged 1 to 3 years can drink 4 glasses of water per day, including milk. Children aged 4 to 8 can drink 5 glasses of water per day, while older children need 7 to 8 glasses of water per day.

How much water should I drink to lose weight?

Water intake may not directly contribute to weight loss. However, combining water intake with calorie restrictions can effectively help improve digestion. Drink 2 glasses of water for 20-30 minutes before taking a meal, which makes you feel full and reduces overeating. Hence, it may help in weight loss.

What are the signs and symptoms of water intoxication?

Water intoxication causes weak symptoms such as disorientation, nausea, confusion, altered mental status, vomiting, and dehydration.

Is 4 litres of water too much for a day?

My weight is 40 kg. How much water should I drink per day?

Use the formula of the water intake calculator: Your Weight (kg) × 35 ml. Therefore, 50 kg * 35 ml (baseline of water intake per kilogram of body weight), and you need 1.75 litres of water per day. If you are an active person, consider your activity level, climate and any special conditions to calculate your water intake level.
