There is no requirement for a Bhutan visa for Indians because of the historic 1949 treaty between the countries. However, Indians do require an entry permit. This entry permit allows Indians to stay in Bhutan for up to 7 days in select regions of the kingdom of Bhutan.
Additionally, travellers must pay a sustainable development fee per day during their whole stay in Bhutan. Make sure to carry a valid ID card and passport to get a permit for entering Bhutan. They charge this fee to fund the country's free education and healthcare and to protect its unique nation.
Even though Indians do not need to get a visa to travel to Bhutan, they do require a permit to travel to the kingdom. Here are two different mandatory permits to get when travelling to Bhutan:
Since there is no requirement for a Bhutan tourist visa for Indian travellers can check out the eligibility criteria for getting a permit. The eligibility and travel rules depend heavily on the purpose of your travel:
| Eligibility Criteria | Specifications |
|---|---|
|
Mandatory Documents (for Adults) |
Adults need to carry an original Passport or Voter ID and two passport-sized photographs to travel to Bhutan. |
|
Mandatory Documents (for Minors) |
Minors travelling to Bhutan should present their Birth Certificate or a passport and be accompanied by a legal guardian. |
|
Long Term Stay Prerequisites |
If someone is travelling for education, work or a long-term stay, they need to provide an invitation letter from a host residing in Bhutan or equivalent. |
While Bhutan does not have a mandatory travel insurance requirement, it is ideal that you get it before going on a trip. Here are a few reasons why:
Bhutan visa for Indians is completely free as Indian travellers only need a Bhutan Entry Permit instead of a tourist visa to enter Bhutan. However, travellers must pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1,200 per person per night. The children aged 5 and below are exempt, while those aged 6-12 get a 50% discount.
Indian citizens can check their Bhutan Entry Permit status by logging into the official Bhutan Immigration Portal or Bhutan Travel Portal using their registered email. For instance, by navigating to the 'My Applications' section and enter your Application Number, Passport Number, or Voter ID Number. A permit processing generally takes up to 5 working days.
Indian citizens do not need a tourist visa to enter Bhutan and therefore do not receive a visa on arrival. Rather, Indians need to obtain a Bhutan Entry permit, which can be applied for online before travelling through the official Bhutan Immigration Services portal.
While entry permits may also be issued at designated entry points such as Paro International Airport or the Phuentsholing border, applying online in advance is better to avoid delays and long queues.
There are no requirements of Bhutan Visa for Indians but here are a few common reasons why Bhutan permit applications get rejected:
